In 1801, a stream of lava swept down the slopes of Mount Hualalai, miraculously sparing the beautiful ancient site where Kona Village Resort now stands. Today, the uniquely Polynesian village welcomes you with a charm all its own.

On 82-acres, 125 individual hale offer guests a choice of picturesque garden views, tranquil lagoon settings and dramatic ocean panoramas. Nine styles range in size from intimate to large enough to accommodate multiple families. So distinctive is each hale that many guests request their same hale upon their return.

At Kona Village Resort, we think of ourselves as one big `ohana, (family). You'll find lots of friendly faces, and complimentary activities as well as arts and crafts programs to keep the keiki (children) entertained. Each day, your children will have an opportunity to make new friends, share adventures and discover for themselves the cultural richness of our resort.

Complimentary programs for children ages 5 to 12*
The Children's Program is a complimentary activity to provide an interesting, educational and entertaining experience for children of a variety of ages focusing primarily on the 6-year old to 12-year old range.

As there is no sign-up or registration for children participating in the program, a child can leave or stop participating at any time. It is therefore essential the parents remain on property or arrange separate babysitting services to monitor the activities of the individual child.

Activities are offered at various locales:

  • 9:30am - 12:00pm
  • 1:30pm - 4:00pm
  • 5:30pm - 8:30pm** (this includes dinner)

It is necessary for children to be registered for keiki dinner.
Starting at 9:30 a.m. each morning, a wide range of activities are provided by experienced program coordinators.

Children 4 years and younger are invited to participate when accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Below is a sample of our activities (each one may not be held daily):

  • Hula classes
  • Fishing contests
  • Coconut painting
  • Net throwing
  • Hawaiian crafts
  • Pool activities
  • Informal marine discovery programs
  • Ball games

At the end of the day, meet at the Manta Ray area in front of the Hale Moana Dining Room. For information on the manta rays scroll down.

The Children's Program is offered every month except May and September (Labor Day until the end of the month).

Babysitting services
Babysitting services for days and evenings should be arranged directly through Malihini Keiki Care, who provides babysitting services for the hotel. Advanced reservations with a minimum 24-hour notice are required. The hourly rate is $15.00 per child. Additional fees apply. Please contact them directly at mkcare@hawaii.rr.com or 808-331-2909. Manta Magic
Photo of manta ray

As told by longtime guest Bob Dean.

A favorite pastime at Kona Village Resort after the dinner hour is to sit and wait for the manta rays to visit, showing their expansive wing span to the guests. A light attached to a coconut tree shines brightly into the ocean and attracts the manta rays to the Kahuwai Bay shoreline. With a wing span of 6 or 7 feet, the manta rays move slowly through the waters. Just a glimmer of the wing tip is exposed, like a wave hello. Sometimes a brush across the rocks announces the ray's presence. The patio chairs at the ocean's edge are conveniently placed for manta ray gazing, not just star gazing.

    Volcano Helicopter Adventure
Guests of Kona Village Resort on Hawaii's Big Island have the opportunity to enjoy a never before offered adventure to view the island's famous, active volcano.

    Historic Petroglyph Tours
Ka`upulehu, the area surrounding our resort, was once the site of an ancient fishing village. Historians believe that ancient Hawaiians recorded important events about their society, ritual beliefs and cultural origins in the smooth volcanic rock. These rock carvings are called petroglyphs.

Our boardwalk at the site not only helps you get a better view of the petroglyphs, it serves to preserve these rare rock carvings as well.

Ka`upulehu's petroglyphs represent some of the finest images in the Hawaiian islands. They exhibit enough differences from other locales to suggest that this site was dedicated to special purposes, most likely subjects involving ancient rituals, myths and the status of royalty.

Hawaiian petroglyphs are both fragile and endangered. They reflect a remnant of ancient ritual life and are a non-renewable resource which deserves to be preserved and protected for future generations.

We invite you to take a glimpse into the past with an extensive tour of our 15-acre petroglyph field. Complimentary tours are scheduled weekly.

    Whale Watching
North Pacific humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Hawai`i starting in late November and are seen most commonly from December through April. Adult humpback whales are 45 feet long and weigh approximately 40 tons. These magnificent creatures are easily seen from shore, but for an even better view, we recommend a pair of binoculars or a catamaran tour.

    Complimentary guided outrigger canoe rides

    Honu, Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles
Kahuwai Bay, which fronts our resort, is a protected marine sanctuary and the home to many green sea turtles, called honu in Hawaiian. If you are out snorkeling, take a peek under the boat moorings, one of their favorite feeding areas. If you are lucky, you might even spot a honu basking on our beach enjoying the warm Kona sun.

    Manta Rays
Every evening, except during the Full Moon, the manta rays swim into the light just feet from the shore fronting the Hale Moana restaurant. Their graceful movements captivate audiences of all ages. Just pull up a chair, listen to the waves and relax.

    Year-round Ka`upulehu Residents
Ka'upulehu is a natural preserve and provides a home to donkeys and goats. Within the resort itself, you will also see nene and black swans.
